DESCRIPTION:

Saaremaa Coeducational Gymnasium is a comprehensive school providing educational instruction to pupils at age of 7-18 (Forms 1-12). The majority of pupils continue their education in university or vocational schools.

The school is situated on the biggest island of Estonia, which is 300 km away from the capital. The school is the oldest school in the area providing secondary education to pupils from all over the island.

There are about 800 pupils on roll. The catchment area the school serves includes Saaremaa and Hiiumaa (neighbouring island), pupils come also from the mainland and other towns of the republic.

Kuressaare is a small town (population about 15 000) known internationally as a popular seaside resort, with seasonal employment opportunities.

Recently however, unemployment has become an issue, people are moving to the mainland to find work. It is rather common that the father or the mother travels to work on Monday and returns to the family on Friday.

The school is a friendly community with long-term traditions. The main goal is to provide good academic and social skills. We are proud to present our culture to the rest of the world through various projects. This Comenius Project will enable to enrich the lives of the participants and introduce them to the history and religion of nations and cultures.
